MTV launches Black History Month at Westminster Kingsway College
The winners of MTV’s American hit show ‘Making The Band’ performed at the Westminster Kingsway Regent’s Park Centre on Tuesday to launch the College’s Black History Month activities.
Brian Andrews, Michael McCluney, Qwanell Mosley, Robert Curry and Willie Taylor; (pictured right at the College) members of boy band Day 26 performed for Westminster Kingsway College’s students and staff as part of their 2 week UK tour.
Day 26 is an American R&B/Pop boy band signed to Bad Boy Records. The group was formed last year on the fourth instalment of MTV’s ‘Making the Band’ and come from New York.
In front of rolling MTV cameras the young men talked to the students and encouraged them not only to celebrate Black History Month but also the individuality and joy of every human being. They went on to perform hit songs from their new album to the ecstatic lunchtime crowd.
Maxine Stephens, Student Services said: “We are very happy that Day 26 decided to join in with Black History Month in the College. This month our theme is ‘Then & Now’, based on looking back on historical struggles and seeing where young people are in society today in regards to what has changed. We want to highlight the importance of education and the value of life.”
The activities planned for the month include a trip to the Liverpool Slave Museum, a theatrical excursion to The Young Vic Theatre, film screenings and debates and a chance for students to win prizes through various quizzes. The finale will be a Black History Cultural Show on Tuesday November 11th.
